Bragging Rights

We all have them, right? A moment where we sit back and say about our kids, “Wow, that’s pretty awesome!” Well, today I just wanted to mention that I had one of those moments. Logan had the special honor of having a pizza party with the principal during lunch today. This was an exclusive lunch and those in attendance were the recipients of their name being drawn out of a collection of S.O.A.R blue tickets. S.O.A.R of course is an acronym that stands for Showing respect, On task, Always safe and Responsible. Whenever the students are caught being well behaved and going above and beyond to exhibit SOAR behavior, they are given one of these blue tickets to take home and then then one that goes into a large collection in the office. The pizza party lunch happens periodically for those students whose names are drawn from having blue tickets in the bunch.

It was after lunch this afternoon that I was volunteering in Logan’s class when his student teacher approached me, kind of excited like, and asked if Logan had a chance to tell me about his lunch with the principal yet. I hadn’t heard anything more from him than that it was fun because he was so busy finishing one project and starting another. It was towards the end of my volunteering time when she approached me again, asking if I had heard anything more from him. But, I still had not because we were all busy with other projects and activities.  I could tell she was itching to have me know more about it, so when they students were all lining up at the door for specials, I went to her and asked her.

She was so excited for Logan because lunch with the prinicpal is a perfect opportunity for him to be proud of his good behavior and to be able to set an example to the other students that if they are well behaved, then they can also have a pizza party with the principal.

Logan was picked up from his classroom by another teacher and brought to the “S.O.A.R. Cafe” which is right in the entryway of the school (not a permanent location, by the way). The student teacher said that when the rest of the class walked to lunch in the cafeteria, they passed by the pizza party and all noticed Logan sitting there with a handful of other students. She said he kind of grinned a little proud grin when they walked by. He wouldn’t have told me that.

Logan said that the principal asked them two questions during lunch. 1. If you could change anything about school what would you change and 2. What is your favorite part about school.

Logan said if it were up to him, he would make recess longer because it’s “really only just 5 minutes long,” and his favorite part about school is writing (that’s my boy!) and he was actually a little sad, he said, to leave the classroom for lunch because they were about to start a writing exercise!

The student teacher asked Logan to please stand in front of the class and tell them all about his experience at lunch. He said he would for sure do it again because it was fun and it was  the best cheese pizza he’s ever had!
