I always said that when I grew up I would attend a very schmancy New Year’s Eve party. The kind in which I would wear a little black party dress and sip champagne out of a crystal glass. I would wear beautiful shoes-the kind I only dream about wearing the other 364 days of the year. My jewelry would glisten and shine and my husband would tell me how beautiful I looked. And, I would tell him how handsome he looked in his black tuxedo with wing-tipped shoes. We would enjoy a lovely meal, then dance the night away to a live band. And, at midnight, said band would play Auld Lang Syne  and I would kiss my husband and welcome in the new year with horns and confetti and cheering! If you could see into my brain right now, you would be viewing the New Year’s Eve party that is attended by Harry and Sally in my favorite movie of all time, When Harry Met Sally. And I wouldn’t even change what I was wearing!

Well, I am not grown up yet, and that is why on this coming Saturday night I will be cozied up inside my home with my family frying up some things yummy with the fryer that I gave Chris last year at Christmas. We will watch movies. Maybe part of the Back to the Future Trilogy or Super 8. Then, at midnight, after we watch the ball drop from Times Square and grumble about how we don’t know who any of the performers are that made appearances on Dick Clark’s Countdown show, we will run upstairs to the window of our bedroom where we have a clear  view of the top of Pike’s Peak. This is when we will watch the fireworks display that occurs there at midnight every New Year’s Eve.

We might briefly discuss the fact that we can’t believe how fast 2011 went and how our kids are growing too fast – then realize that we better get to bed because in six hours, said kids will most likely be waking up!

It’s an annual ritual that we love doing. But, the year that I find myself in my favorite little black dress beside my man in his (rented) black tux dancing the night away on New Year’s Eve, then I will know I have grown up.
