It was 2:25 this afternoon when Chris came upstairs just to confirm with me that Logan had his after-school Sports Challenge today from 2:30 to 3:30. “Of course!” I declared…otherwise I would have been long gone on my way to pick him up already!
Then, at 2:32, I thought to myself…”He did have it today, didn’t he? I mean, he did say to me this morning that he would see me after Sports Challenge…”
Doubt began to set in…but luckily I was saved from it right away by the sudden ringing of my phone. It was a sweet friend of mine…with kids that go to Logan’s school. And as soon as I saw her name come up, I knew. I knew my gut was right.
Me: Hello?
Her: Jen, are you ok?
Me (slightly bugging out): Logan’s with you isn’t he?
Her: What?
Me: Logan’s with you…he’s waiting for me right?
Her: Yea!
Me (without letting her speak…): I knew it! Only a moment ago I told Chris that didn’t think Logan had Sports Challenge today and I bet he’s waiting outside on the playground for me!
Her (laughing): It’s ok! He’s fine! He was looking around for you while rubbing his chin and I knew you’re never late, so I asked him if he wanted me to call you! He’s fine! He’s with me.
Me: I’ll be right over!
I flailed about after hanging up the phone, muttering something to Chris about how I wasn’t there to pick up my son from school…I knew it….blah blah…must get my schedule straight…blah blah….and, “Oh! Can I leave Eli with you? Tell him good-bye for me and I’ll be right back!”
Luckily I was only 7 minutes late and as I walked down the sidewalk to the playground, I could see my friend wearing Logan’s back pack and visiting with the other moms. I’m sure my face was flushed as they all watched me approach. They smiled big and greeted me. I greeted them back with a wave and a confident voice that announced, “Just be sure and vote for me for Mom-of-the-Year!”
And, just in case you are wondering if my negligence in any way affected the well-being of my son, I think he’s OK. I, of course, realize the situation could have been decidedly worse, but in this case, having never been late…or forgotten…before, I consider it noteworthy!
I’ll be accepting your votes until the end of May! 😉
