I experienced a “first” today. This “first” involves two words: bacon and cupcake. Can those two words go together nicely and not fight? Evidently, yes. Of course in this day and age, bacon can pretty much go with anything you want it to go with and more commonly next to sweet treats.
I tracked down the Colorado Springs Cupcake Truck this afternoon to acknowledge my celebratory mood due to my website launch. Have you seen it before? It looks like this:
This truck travels around Colorado Springs Wednesday through Saturday and I just happened to know where he was this afternoon and that his flavor o’ the day was the “Elvis.” Now, Elvis was way before my time, but even so, simply due to pop culture, I know his namesake flavor might involve bacon, peanut butter and banana. I’m sad to confess that I was leery to try it, but i’m just keepin’ it real. I decided I just had to go for it, but I also got a standard flavor that I knew I’d like just in case. I wish I could have ordered it with more confidence, being the foodie that I claim to be, not to mention my desire to be like the un-scared woman who ordered the Elvis right before me. Oh well, I’ll get there. At least I got one and tasted it. Right, to the tasting. Enough of these words about it. You want to know how it tasted.
There it is. Those are real pieces of bacon on top. Are you freaking out right now? There were even bacon pieces inside the banana-flavored cake, topped with peanut butter frosting. Here are the results of the tasting from my panel of family:
Logan: “Not so, so, so, so good, but fine. I only taste bacon and frosting.”
Chris: “I couldn’t taste any peanut butter. I tasted a little banana, but mostly just bacon. The bacon pieces in the cake were too big.”
Eli: “It’s really good!” This lemon one and this new one!”
Me: “I don’t like the texture of bacon in my cake. The flavor was fine, but I prefer a sweeter cupcake.”
There you have it. I think the general consensus was that we were all grateful for an extra back up just in case. Our favorites so far after three encounters with the truck are the Colorado Snowball, Pikes Peak Pistachio, Vanilla Party and the Zippy Lemon.
