Knock Your Socks Off Brownies

It’s not all that often that Chris and I save a dessert recipe, we often keep our eyes peeled for delicious dinner recipes. I think we prefer to cook over bake, but that’s just us. And, please don’t misunderstand, we love ourselves some dessert. So, when we happen to stumble upon a recipe for dessert that warrants a print out and filing in my three-ring-recipe binder, I know it’s gotta be good. For the past three months, now, I’ve remembered that this recipe has been in there. It’s hard to forget, for one, because of its catchy name. Knock You Naked Brownies. Chris actually found the recipe here. Oh my word, it’s The Pioneer Woman’s again! But, the following is my account of how it went down in our kitchen during our fun family activity.

I have taken it upon myself to rename it for the sake of my family, since knock you naked isn’t common vernacular around here. We do, however, often say knock your socks off or knock my socks off or his socks, her socks, or their socks and that is what the new name of these brownies shall be! Knock Your Socks Off Brownies. 

I decided yesterday that it was time to build said brownies to have for dessert after a neighborly Labor Day BBQ. I felt it was time to recruit my kids in helping me in the kitchen for this job. I want so much to include them in the kitchen, but their interest is lacking. There are Legos to build in the next room, after all! However, they do make an exception when unwrapping caramels and chocolate chips is part of the job!

So far, caramels, nuts and chocolate chips are the favored  ingredients!

The boys are unwrapping the final caramel squares.

They are such a distraction! Chris and caramels go way back…it’s been a while since their last encounter.

We combined German Chocolate Cake mix, melted butter, powered sugar with the nuts, caramel and chocolate chips.

It turned out really thick – the way it’s supposed to.

I patted half of the mixture into a square baking dish. Then baked it for 9 minutes.

While the cake baked, I melted evaporated milk and the caramels in a makeshift double boiler.

While the caramels melted, I took the remaining cake mixture and shaped it into this square to be used as a top layer later on.

When the first layer of cake mixture was done baking, I poured the melted caramel on top. Gooey yumminess!

And, as if that wasn’t decadent enough, then I added a layer of the chocolate chips on top of that!

Then, I snuggled that top layer in and baked it all for 25 minutes. The aroma in the house was ridiculous!

This was it when it came out of the oven. See the caramel sneaking up the sides? Mmmmm.

But this was it garnished with powdered sugar before it was gobbled all up!

Shhh…Don’t tell anyone, but I’m having a piece right now! Socks. Knocked. Off.
