And, For My Next Trick, I Will Become a Cake Decorator!

It was New Year’s Eve day 2011, when my family and I found ourselves enjoying a late breakfast at one of my favorite morning food places, The Egg and I. This was when Logan began asking us about the astrological signs that we were born under. So, for fun,  Chris and I began looking up traits for each of our individual astrological signs. Well, we found some pretty accurate accounts of our personalities and characteristics.

Logan (Cancer) is indeed emotional, loving, intuitive, imaginative, cautious, protective and sympathetic!

Eli (Libra) can certainly be sociable and idealistic. Diplomatic? Romantic? Those are yet to be seen, though.

Chris (Pisces) is known to be imaginative, compassionate, quite selfless and sympathetic.

As for myself, I’m a Gemini. The twins. Don’t blame me! My twin did it!

Where was I? Right! One of the most intriguing traits that was listed under Gemini is my constant desire to reinvent myself in an effort to be mysterious and keep those around me guessing. Well, I don’t know how true  the second part of that is, but the first part is spot on. Let’s see…how have I reinvented myself over the years…(wannabe) biker chic; rock climber; boxer; yogi; chef (er…um…cook may be more accurate); writer…

But now, it is time yet again to present the newest reinvention of me…I give you…pastry chef!

Oh my word, I’m just kidding! I wouldn’t even begin to lessen the integrity of the term Pastry Chef by placing my name next to it! How about cake decorator?

Will that suffice? You see, I thought it might be fun to start learning how to become a real cake decorator. I will teach myself! And, to do that I will turn to those items right up there! Oh. And down there…

I saw this kit by Wilton at Hobby Lobby after Christmas and became quite inspired to make learning how to decorate cakes my New Year’s resolution! It seems pretty self explanatory!

I mean, look! Decorating Basics…should be a breeze! Maybe I can even become good enough by March to make Chris a super looking cake adorned with fish…maybe an ocean scene…for his birthday (remember: Pisces!)

But I have to use Fondant and Gum Paste. That scares me a little.

I bought a Fondant rolling pin and a roll-n-cut mat to work on, though! How hard can it be?

(I think it’s going to be hard.)

I realize there might be a small handful of additional items that I’ll need, like, say for instance, an 8-inch cake circle, a veining tool, and two dowel rods. Dowel rods? For cake decorating? This might be why I have my new supplies positioned very nicely in the corner of this room and haven’t attempted any actual use of them yet.

Perhaps I will keep a running tally of how many days they sit there, taunting me, until I finally own up to my commitment and try my hand at it.

Stay tuned, my friends…
