Becoming One with the Machine

Today I am focusing on becoming one with my sewing machine. I think I actually did entertain the idea of naming it. Perhaps naming it will bring me even one step closer to said one-ness! Ok. I will think about this while I write and who knows, maybe by the end of this post I will have a name announcement! Oh! The anticipation!!

All day I’ve had the lyrics to the Pink Floyd song, Welcome to the Machine, running through my head. Turns out they don’t say, “Welcome my friends, welcome to the machine…” But instead, “Welcome my son…” As if maybe he’s giving instruction on auto mechanics or something. (I suspect that might not be accurate). I think for my purposes, I will sing to you, “Welcome my friends, welcome to the machine…” And although my voice is not as loud and booming as is in the song and my hands might not be outstretched, I mean it with the same passion because, this indeed, is an exciting day!

Over the course of the last three days…not entire days…just about 30 to 45 minutes each afternoon, I have arrived at the actual sewing portion of my self-training. I suspected the threading part might have given me a pain in my side by the way some of my sewing friends asked me if I had threaded it yet, or would I like help with that part.

I will say that the love I have received over this adventure has been truly inspiring and I am so grateful!! I was 98 percent finished with the whole threading part yesterday when I had to stop to prepare for work. I had left off at a point where I had no idea what came next, but it turns out it was a short, short finish this morning.

Short…but not without just a little side pain and a furrowed brow. I just couldn’t seem to get the lower thread to come out far enough to grasp it! I tried my tiniest pliers and even tape! I was this close to running upstairs to get my tweezers, when, to my delight, I was able to put my finger tips around the end of that thread and pull it out!

Then, I kind of looked and looked again at my instruction manual to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. I got hung up on the line that read, Pull the thread through the toes of the presser foot . You see, there wasn’t an illustration with that part like there was with so much of the previous instruction. So, with a deep breath, I just went for it! I lifted the needle and the presser foot. Presser Foot. Put my fabric underneath, lowered it and pressed that pedal!

I’m a seamstress!

And there, my friends, is what I sewed this morning. One long edge, one short edge, two corners and one three-stitch reverse!

You better believe I’m headed back down to my studio corner very soon to practice some more! I am gradually becoming less scared and more and more excited. I can do this!

Ok, now for the name.

Boo.

How anticlimactic for you. I’m sorry. I guess I can’t just come up with one so quickly. And I feel like it must be a female name…one with a vintage feel to it. Any ideas?

Happy Sewing till we meet again!!
