Behind a closed door

I brought Logan shopping for pants today at the Osh Kosh outlet and experienced something a little different in the process. Let’s just say we “turned over a new leaf.” We “started a new chapter.” We “crossed a new bridge.” You pick – they all work.

As we (mostly I) stood before the immense wall of jeans with seven different styles, I struggled to pinpoint a starting place. I thought to myself two things. 1) This is for a boy in first grade-I just need a plain old pair of jeans! 2) Darnit, where’s the fitting room?

Upon hearing he would have to take the time to try the jeans on, he grumbled and argued that I already knew what size he was and when I held them up to him, they seemed to look ok. I urged him to try them on because we aren’t familiar with this brand. Carpenter? Classic? Light or dark wash? Slim? Husky…what’s husky? Is my boy husky? Turns out he is!

I grabbed an armful and lead him to the fitting room where we both walked in accompanied by his bemoaning the whole thing. I’m certain a little squiggly line had appeared above my head (see “Funktastic Morning” in previous post) as I lovingly, but with earnest, explained that “I will not spend money on jeans…blah blah blah…unless we know they fit!” I placed the jeans down on the bench and told him he could start trying them on.

He agreed finally, but then just stood there. OH! I realized maybe he would like some privacy.

Here’s what happened next:

Me: “I’ll just turn around and look at the door.”

Him: (nothing)

Me: (Turning around to see why he wasn’t speaking).

Him: (Pointing and nodding his head at the door, eyes wide).

Me: Oh! You want me to wait outside?

Him: Yes.

So, yea, I wait outside the fitting room now. But when he’s done putting a pair of pants on, he shouts at me that he’s got them on, but I have to remind him to open the door so I can see, because it’s locked, of course. I guess its not so bad, even though I have been asked to leave the fitting room, he still wants me there to show me. Thank goodness!
