I said to my family yesterday during dinner that I would hope someday my boys would look back fondly on their childhood and remember that we took a lot of daycation day trips.
Take yesterday for instance. We had planned this day a couple of weeks ago as it might have been the last free weekend day until school starts to escape far away for 12 hours together! *gasp!*
Buena Vista is two hours south west of us. I hope I’m correct on the south part of those coordinates! Never-the-less, we drive like we are headed west to Breckenridge and when it would normally be time to turn right to go there, we turn left to go to Buena Vista, instead.
Buena Vista is home to the Collegiate Peaks: Mt. Harvard, Mt. Yale and Mt. Princeton. If I remember correctly, they are all 14ers. This was the view as we came over the hill and could finally tell the kids, “Yes, dear children, now we are almost there!”
When we go to Buena Vista, our favorite thing to do is eat our picnic lunch on the rocks that line the Arkansas River. We’ve done this one other time. Last summer, I think!
You see, you couldn’t pay for better meal time entertainment!
And, it wouldn’t be a DeZeeuw family outing if we didn’t have a feet shot to go with it!
Awww, me and my baby down by the river! Except, ever since we took this picture, I can’t seem to get the Paul Simon song Me and Julio Down By the School Yard out of my head!
My boys were very brave scooting around these rocks!
I call these shoes my adventure shoes even though I wear them on a regular basis! But when I got them 18 months ago, they claimed to be a water-safe shoe, hence the many holes in them…
Well, I had to see if it was true! So, I waded out into the river as far as I felt safe! I told the boys that sometimes there are only things that moms are allowed to do. They worked! But they didn’t dry as quickly as I thought they would-they were still very wet when we got home last night!
But of course, when we found more shallow water, the guys needed to get their feet wet, too!
Logan seemed a little more particular about keeping dry than his brother!
Best pals!
I happened to make some new friends along our journey yesterday! Dave and Amy are the owners of this little food truck (except for that it is in a permanent location here!). The truck is called Lovin’ Spoonfuls and it might be the cutest thing I’ve seen…in a long long time!
This is how she displays snacks and bottled water! In these plastic bins that hang from a tree branch!
As we went for a small drive, we came accross this Railroad Bridge and I will tell you how much my husband loves me. He pulled off the road right away upon spotting it and when I asked him what he was doing, he just motioned for me to go take some pictures! He just knew I’d be itching to get out here for this pic! I think he’s glad he pulled over for me! 🙂
This couch here is made of concrete and the guys thought it would be funny to demonstrate how very tired they were after such a full day!
I might have found my dream home in Buena Vista yesterday! It’s for sale, too! But, two things, Chris said we could buy it if it were less than $5 (yes… five dollars). There wasn’t a price to be found. And, well, as much as we love Buena Vista, we are more city-ish folks, I guess. As much as I wouldn’t want to admit it, I just did. We might get bored here.
These stairs led down to the water’s edge.
The boys felt quite mighty here at the top, I’m sure!
Along our drive, we discovered these three tunnels. So cool for us all to look at! And drive through!
As we drove away from town, this is what was just forming to the right of us! What a perfect gift to end a very perfect day!
Jen, you always crack me up! Your hubby gets brownie points for pulling over so you can take photos even when you didn’t ask him to. Plus the shot is phenomenal. You have become as addicted to Instagram as I am. 😉 Your photos have come a long way since the beginning too. {Please take that as a compliment ;)} My Daughter informs me all the time that people might take what I say the wrong way. Maybe that’s why I don’t have more friends. I must unintentionally say something offensive. I love this family day trip…great memories and fun! Summer is coming to a close. We have to make the most of it while we can, huh? BTW, check your email. 🙂
Hey Shan!! Thanks for leaving a lovely comment! And, I do appreciate your compliment on my Instagram pics! I am completely addicted and glad to know that you consider yourself the same way! I long for these kinds of days. I am most certainly at my best when they happen!
Have a great week, my friend!!
