A friend of mine once said to me, “Jen, I hope I have holes in the knees of my jeans someday from playing on the floor with my kids so much.” Her point being, she never wants to look back and wish she had played with her kids more. Or, more so, she didn’t want her kids to look back and think, “Too bad Mom never played with us more.”
These are very poignant thoughts, obviously they are, because this was something my friend said many, many years ago and it has still stuck with me. As if holes in the knees of your jeans would be tangible proof that enough playing was had. Huh. I think I could almost just leave this post right there. That’ll knock the wind right out of ya! Well, it might just knock the wind right out of me and send me running for the box of Kleenex if I sit and think about it too long! So, I won’t leave it right there, because I don’t feel like having the emotions drawn out of me today, leaving me wondering if the little wear n’ tear in my jeans is the makings of a hole or not.
My point in all this is that I have become a firm believer that quality playing doesn’t exactly have to come in the form of playing on the floor. While much fun can indeed be had there, let me tell you about something I have discovered outdoors with my smallest guy that may just slide right into first place on the level of fun. And, sadly, it has just been with my smallest guy and not both guys because it involves me using my older one’s Razor Scooter while he’s at school.
Yes! That’s right! Scooting is my new favorite thing! You have got to try this! And, I happen to know that I am not the only mother around here that enjoys the use of her older son’s scooter while he’s at school. In fact, one sweet mom/friend that I have rides her older son’s scooter to school to pick him up and then he rides it home. She looks great on it! So when I commented on how great that looked and how much fun she looked like she was having, she told me to give it a whirl! So, there we were, two moms taking turns on her son’s scooter before the bell rang. That right there is the makings of a scooter mom club. Or mom scooter club. Im just saying…
The very next day Eli and I went out scooting around the cul-de-sac and had “races” and it was a blast! I think there might be decent exercise in it too! When Eli told Logan at dinner that night that I had been using his scooter, he was perfectly fine with it but asked, “Did you wear a helmet, though?” Ooops!
This morning Eli and I were at it again. I miss Logan, though. I might just have to invest in one for grown ups so we can all three go together. I think they have grown up ones…right?
I might be a little tall for it, but this fact is really no deterrent. I am even able to turn without putting my foot down! I think I truly need my own. If it doesn’t work out with the moms, I can have my own little scooter gang with my kids. That right there is quality parenting if I do say so myself!
I love it!! I think soon we will see packs of moms riding scooters through our neighborhood. I am looking forward to learning how to use a ripstik with you! (hope your sister has a great flight home…it was fun to meet her)
We’ll be the first of its kind! I can’t wait! Still working on the acquisition of a ripstik…but soon! Thanks for the well wishes for my sis!
