I wish you could have seen Logan’s face this weekend after he asked a reindeer keeper the truth about the flying. You see, we found ourselves in the small southeast-of-Denver community of Parker on Saturday with Grandma Carolyn as part of her birthday celebration. None of us had been to the historic downtown center of this town before and thought it might be fun to check it out. Little did we realize that there was a Christmas Carriage celebration taking place as we walked in and we arrived just moments before a carriage parade was about to take place!
However, before hand, there were three actual reindeer hanging out for us to take a look at and ponder how the flying works. I do declare they are quite beautiful animals with a very whimsical air about them!
Logan wasted no time in approaching the keeper, donned in a sequined Santa hat, to find out if these here reindeer were of the flying variety. Upon batting NO eye, the girl revealed that these are in fact some of the reindeer used on Santa’s team, however, they only fly after being sprinkled with a magic powder that only works on Christmas Eve. The girl spoke with such authority and excitement! After hearing this big reveal, Logan turned around to us, eyes wide, smile spread all the way across his lips with a sense of satisfaction and yet still a bit of wonder. He beamed at this reindeer in front of him, as if trying to slow his imagination down just enough to grab an appropriate image of it in actual flight.
It’s enough to make me a believer indeed! At least three times this season already I have become emotional over the holiday at hand. The first time was during a friend’s cookie exchange, when Santa, himself, arrived at the front door with specific gifts in tow for each child; the first time I wished someone a Merry Christmas (it was probably while my children placed coins in the Salvation Army’s Bell Ringer basket); and then this last time after seeing Logan react to the story of the flying reindeer!
It’s a magical time of year, what can I say? Especially when there are small children involved.
I hope your season is progressing magically!
