Paddle Board Yoga: Don’t Fall In!

When my sister first mentioned to me that she found a Groupon for paddle board yoga and would I like to do it with her while I was in Los Angeles visiting her, I immediately thought two things. 1. I wouldn’t like to wear a bathing suit while doing yoga!!! 2. I haven’t done Yoga in so long, I probably forgot how and therefore might very likely fall in the water! Insecure. Insecure. Insecure.

Then, I had a moment of realization in which I was reminded that it’s not like me to pass up a cool opportunity such as this one! Phew! So glad I experienced that moment, because this was so much fun and I would most certainly do it again!!

We were lucky enough that it was just my sister and I and the instructor! Private lesson all the way! Woo Hoo! Our instructor was this cute little blond that arrived at the beach in an enormous trailer truck that read, YogAqua. She opened the back hatch to reveal layer upon layer of paddle boards and paddles. Without hesitation, she  pulled out the ones that we would use and hoisted her’s up under her arm and instructed us to do the same. My sis has used a paddle board once or twice before, but I’ve never laid a finger on one! So, when in Rome, right? We did as we were instructed and made our way across the parking lot, paddle boards in tow, through the sand and to the water, where we experienced a bit of a relief upon setting them down! They were kind of big and awkward! We pushed them out into the water to about shin-deep where the yoga instructor and my sister hopped right on. Haha! I got so nervous because I hadn’t ever experienced this feeling before! So, I crawled onto mine! I did! It was the only way I felt like I could gain the balance that I needed without falling off!

Well, I made it on successfully.  If you can see, I am totally locked in place (You can click on the picture to see it larger). I’m hardly even moving my head for fear of wrecking the balance that I had established. But, I mean to tell you, my ankles hurt so bad before long for holding them still so fervently!

The first half hour was spent paddling our way up and down the channel, getting used to the feeling of the water and the board. Once we were in an open area, we anchored our boards and began an hour-long Yoga class. Picture a class in a studio…only on the water!! That right up there is me succeeding in Crow Pose! I didn’t even fall!

This is my sister in a very lovely back bend!

It took every bit of balance that I could muster, but I felt surprisingly confident on my place on the board.

But, I knew the moment my concentration was lost, balance would be compromised, and it wouldn’t have taken much at all to fall in!

The water was really deep, even!

Of course it wouldn’t be my sis and I if we didn’t ham it up a little! So sweet. Sisterly love!

Oh there, that’s better! This was an awesome experience to share with her! I hope we can do it again sometime!
