My family and I had the pleasure of getting to see The Muppets yesterday, just under the wire I think, before it stopped playing in theaters. I make this assumption because we watched the one and only show that was playing in the entire city of Colorado Springs and it happened to be clearly on the other side of town! But, wow, was it worth it! I knew it would be good, but this far exceeded my expectations. If you were a fan of the original The Muppet Show which began airing way back in September of 1976, this film was made for you. It is an all around perfect family film, but will mean that much more if you sat around your television once a week with your family watching original episodes in all their glory.
Chris and I laughed…we cried…we nodded our heads in reminiscent recollection. Seeing this with our kids was special in that we could share with them a part of our childhood that meant so much to us. The Muppets were such a fixture in our lives. Were they in yours, too? Well, before I list the characters for you to place your “most favorite Muppet” vote on, let me leave you with a short story of the discussion that the four of us had after the movie was over.
In a loud – voiced effort for the kids to know that they were to be involved in this conversation, too, I asked Chris if we should go home and try to find original episodes of The Muppet Show so that the kids could watch them. “Doesn’t that sound like fun, boys?” I asked in such an excited voice. And….nothing. “Boys?” I asked. It was as if I should have cued the crickets, it was so quiet. Then Chris suggested they had no idea what I was talking about. And, he was absolutely right. No where in their brains was the idea of a real The Muppet Show ever deposited. As far as they knew, the existence of the Muppets extended only as far as the screen they had just viewed for the last hour-and-a-half.
I took a deep breath and realized that was a sad reality-one that we would have to fix. But, in the mean time, I told them the story of the real The Muppet Show. We did go home and find a few clips of the originals-one in particular of “Pigs In Space” where Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, R2-D2 and Chewbacca make an appearance and you might imagine our boys were loving it. I think they were hooked after that. And, need I even mention that upon brushing teeth and preparing for bed the only tune being sung out of all our mouths was “mahna mahna..” remember that one?
Without further ado, below you will find photos of the Muppets to help you decide which one was your favorite and then you may feel free to cast your vote in this week’s poll question: Who is your most favorite Muppet? (If I happened to have left your favorite out, please feel free to add your’s to the comment section. Thank you!)
