I went to the library with Eli the other day and stocked up on a lot of books that I thought both of my guys would appreciate cozying up with their mama over. There were a few that were more specific to each one, but for the most part, they would like them all.
Turns out, I realized after taking this picture, that four of the chapter books have already been stashed in Logan’s secret reading place in his closet!
Since Logan didn’t have school Friday, I thought it would be nice to spend a little quiet time together reading these books that afternoon after Eli’s Speech Therapy appointment. Lunch was had, playing was enjoyed and then I suggested we go curl up with the new books I had gotten. I went and grabbed one in particular that I thought looked cool about magic clocks and that’s when Logan knocked my socks off.
“I already read that one…” Logan told me.
“You did?” I asked in a high-pitched query.
“Yes!” He said. “I read all of them.”
“All of them?”
“Yes! All of them!” He told me as matter of factly…
As if it were no big deal at all to him, I let him know that I had thought it would be nice to get to read these books to him and his brother all together.
But, he beat me to it. And, by no means am I upset that my child reads. That is great! It was more just a realization for me that one of the things I always loved as a go-to time for being together might look a little different from now on.
At least, though, I remembered that I had checked out Roald Dahl’s classic, The BFG, that I sort of kept as a surprise, that for sure we could read together, because it might be a little ahead of him yet. I remember first loving Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach in late second – to – third-grade.
“I already started reading it, Mom,” Logan tells me.
“What?” You did? I can’t believe it. This was for sure to be the one that I could still read to him!
He couldn’t put it down.
You see, that up there is what pretty much what happened for a while yesterday afternoon. Poor Eli wanted to play so bad with his big brother, but big brother couldn’t take his nose out of his book!
Again, I’m happy about this! And, also very happy that he is beginning to read some of the classics that I remember reading! But, come on…it’s a warm, perfectly lovely spring day! I had to insist that he save the book for later and play in the back yard with his brother.
Was that bad of me?
Last summer I remember having to strongly encourage my son to put down the Legos and go play outside!
I guess if I still want to be able to read books to my biggest guy, I might have to up the ante next time I head to the library! Maybe give him a little more of a challenge! Or not, maybe I’ll just bring home some other Roald Dahl books…and accept the fact that he can read them to me!
I love the observation about Leonardo DiCaprio!
