A Good Good Year…

It was an interesting thing on the last day of school three months ago. While we were all smiles about the upcoming summer vacation, there was a looming feeling that I wouldn’t be rid of until yesterday.

You see, what I’m learning as the elementary school years begin to speed by is that I can’t do everything for my child (ren). There are just some things that are out of my hands-take for example Logan’s second-grade teacher.

There are four second-grade teachers at Freedom Elementary. Three of them I hear are just fine. One of them I hear is just not. And I worked really hard to insure that Logan would not get that one. This is because after speaking with Ms. Caceres (first grade teacher) last spring about the kind of teacher whose class Logan would thrive, this one’s would not be the place. She said my guy is quite serious and it would be important for him to stay in a fun-loving class environment where he would continue to learn that education can be fun and light-hearted and its OK for him to make mistakes.

So, I bring up this looming feeling once again. While I filled out request form indicating where Logan would thrive and why, there aren’t any promises or guarantees that he would get any of the three teachers that we would be at ease with. Well, yesterday came. The teacher reveal day. The day that would have us wait until 4:15 in the afternoon to go to school and elbow our way to the window in the front of the school to try and spot the second grade list and our child’s name under it that would indicate who would be teaching him for the next nine or so months.

The Reveal

I was so nervous, I mean to tell you. All week long I was an emotional disaster. I was so concerned that Logan’s teacher would not be in his favor and he might end up disliking school for the rest of his public school career all because of one bad second-grade experience!

Logan and Mrs. Shewey

Well, if you take a look right up there, you will see and guess that he got a good one…a really good one. I might have shed a tear of joy when I saw his name listed under her class! Not only that, but he is in the same class as a couple of friends who he started out in Kindergarten with! It is kind of exciting to think that he will be with these kids through the years-its fun to watch them grow up together  Ug…grow up! My heart…! I knew she was going to be great, but then my knowledge of said greatness was confirmed when, after I asked her if I could get a photo with she and my boy, she asked him if he wanted a silly face picture or a nice smile picture. And here’s what happened! Logan opted for a nice smile picture first because he is so serious! He probablay thought it was some how wrong to take a silly face picture with his TEACHER!

When I reminded him that he has such a great silly face, he agreed to take one of each and that right there broke the ice!

Shall we talk about my Eli for a moment! Yea, when did he get this big? I can’t believe my eyes! But if anyone has been ready in their young life for preschool its this guy.

And it appears to be a most perfect fit for him! Right inside Freedom Elementary, Eli will be in class with two of his friends already and has a super sweet teacher named Ms. Jennifer. As she explained to Chris and I last night at the open house, Eli is going to learn how to be a person in the world (ok, those are my words…)! Meaning, he will learn how to get a friend’s attention…how to pay a compliment, how to share, how to listen and be respectful…all of these things! I think he is going to grow up by leaps and bounds this year. Am I ready? Well, yes. I think I am. But I better just make sure I have my Kleenex handy come Monday morning.

The hardest part of being a mom is watching my kids grow up. But it’s also the best and most exciting.
